In Cambodia, women are stepping up their games in leadership, entrepreneurship, social dialogues, social involvement, and empowering other women to do the same, to pave the way for a more inclusive and equal society and challenge existing traditional norms and expectations.
Let us look at 5 successful and inspirational women in our country below:
1. San Vannary
Vannary is one of Cambodia’s top women entrepreneurs. She is a fashion designer whose goal is to promote Cambodia’s silk to the world. In the last 10 years, she diligently worked with local artisans to ensure that her products are ethical, involving marginalized communities in her silk fabric business Lotus Silk. She hopes to help lift them out of poverty by providing sustainable income, and fair working conditions for her employees.
2. Keo Kounila
Nila was one of Cambodia’s first bloggers. She started Blue Lady Blog in 2007 as a platform to discuss various issues within the country. Currently, she runs her own marketing company offering digital marketing services and communication strategies among other things. She was enlisted as one of Forbes Under 30s and is a strong advocate for women rights in Cambodia.
3. Catherine Harry
Well known for her Facebook blog page “A Dose of Cath,” Catherine is a young female vlogger who challenges social norms by discussing topics that were previously considered a taboo among Cambodian women. Her goal is to educate and empower women to normalize the conversation surround what was considered sensitive topics ranging from, safe sex, contraception, abortion, rape, menstruation etc.
4. Neang Sovathana
More commonly known as DJ Nana, Vathana is an outspoken radio DJ and TV personality. Her shows open the floor for young Cambodians, especially women to discuss about issues that were considered taboo to discuss in the public such as, sex before marriage, family issue, domestic violence, and sexual abuse. She also has a Facebook page that offers advice to youngsters on various topics.
